ADOBE CONNECT PRO

  • Conferencing: The Video Pod displays two speakers and users unpause the other speakers.  Mobile users can enter/exit breakout rooms but a moderator must grant access.

EVA: Mobile learners can use the Video Pod simultaneously with other pods or full-screen it which allows them to decide how to structure their collaboration space. Manually unpausing speakers creates dead air because learners must manage communication tools instead of collaborate.  Learners cannot move freely between the main and breakout rooms which creates dead air because they must prompt moderators to initiate inter-group collaboration.

Rating:

  • Instant Messaging: Mobile users can IM everyone or individuals in the main and breakout rooms.

EVA: Mobile learners can use the Chat Pod for both group and one-to-one collaboration.  If learners wants to engage in only text-based collaboration dead air will occur when switching off audio and video conferencing and minimizing any other open pod.

Rating:

  • Notes: Users can use the Note Pod in both the main and breakout rooms, but the first user who uses the Note Pod in a breakout room must reenter to continue using it.

EVA: Mobile breakout rooms create dead air whenever learners use the Note Pod because educators must continue managing the breakout room which disrupts group collaboration and distracts him/her from managing the virtual classroom (answering questions, collecting polling data, etc.).  Moreover, educators cannot be mobile because they must manage breakout rooms from a desktop.  If an educator cannot manage a breakout room then mobile learners cannot effectively expand ideas or record meeting minutes to accelerate collaboration.

BLACKBOARD COLLABORATE

  • Conferencing: Mobile users can collaborate in breakout rooms but cannot view other breakout rooms, nor can moderators manage breakout rooms on mobile devices.  Mobile users cannot use video.

EVA: Although mobile users cannot see other breakout rooms, it is critical that they can enter them to define group dynamics and set tasks. A Collaborate mobile virtual classroom cannot emulate a face-to-face classroom, which may create dead air by slowing or discouraging responses from learners uncomfortable with an impersonal learning environment.

Rating:

  • Instant Messaging: Mobile users can IM all participants in both the main and breakout rooms.

EVA: Mobile learners cannot use IM for one-to-one text-based collaboration thereby inhibiting the collaboration process. Learners using Collaborate who need to engage in one-to-one collaboration will use other applications.  Switching between one-to-one collaboration in one application and group collaboration in Collaborate will create dead air.  When learners need to quickly communicate with an educator (i.e. asking for access to a breakout room) dead air will occur because they must use the question push-button notification which will put them in a queue.

CISCO WEBEX

  • Conferencing:  Active speaker technology automatically displays the speaker's video, which allows mobile users to follow conversations while sharing content.  Mobile users cannot attend breakout sessions.

EVA:  Mobile learners focus on sharing and absorbing information while communication remains peripheral.  Active speaker technology also enhances virtual classroom management because it eliminates dead air by not prompting learners to manage communication tools. Learners experience dead air when they leave the virtual classroom to enter a new session simulating a breakout room.

  • Instant Messaging: Mobile users can IM everyone or individuals in the main room.  Mobile users can also enter only the IM portion of a session via the Cisco Jabber app.

EVA: Cisco Jabber is useful for mobile learners in transit who wish to choose audio, video or text-based collaboration. Learners can start collaborating in only the IM potion of a session, then seamlessly ladder into the audio portion via integration with Telepresence, and lastly enter the video portion via integration with WebEx Meetings.  The interpolity of text, audio and video collaboration minimizes dead air.

  • Social Networking: WebEx Social provides mobile users with the ability to communicate with individuals in the greater community and crowd source.

EVA: WebEx Social entices other individuals to enrich the collaboration process with new perspectives.   WebEx Social encourages learners to develop a knowledge-building community when they are not actively collaborating, but have free time to network while in transit.
