ADOBE CONNECT PRO

  • Access:  Accessible via log-in account and URL on mobile.  Mobile users can also access sessions via telephone but Connect advises against this without a noise-cancelling headset because Connect does not have integrated background noise cancellation.

EVA: There are several ways for mobile learners to access Connect and start collaborating quickly to avoid dead air.  However, the audio-only feature in Connect is not optimized for mobile devices, which discourages learners from collaborating while in transit.

Rating:

  • BYOD: Available on Android, BlackBerry, and iOS platforms.

EVA: Connect has limited functionality in a BYOD learning environment.

Rating:

  • Interface: Moderators can preconfigure the layout of pods by touching them.  Connect includes some push-button notifications (e.g. raise hand).

EVA: Connect enables educators to design virtual classrooms and mobile learners to customize their learning experience by rearranging pods.  Push button notifications give learners direct access to the educator.

  • Recordings: Connect records sessions on mobile devices.  Connect cannot play recordings on mobile and offers no video conversion tools. .

EVA: Recordings are asynchronously accessible via the Adobe Connect account.  However, the inability to play recordings creates dead air and inhibits reflection because learners must use another application to convert recordings to a format Connect plays.

BLACKBOARD COLLABORATE

  • Access: Accessible via log-in account and URL on mobile.  Mobile users cannot enter Collaborate sessions via teleconferencing.

EVA:  Mobile learners will refrain from participating in the collaboration process if they face a circumstance where they prefer to enter the audio-only portion of a session.

  • BYOD: Available on Android, iOS, and Kindle platforms.

EVA: Collaborate has limited functionality in a BYOD learning environment.

Rating:

  • Interface: Collaborate offers several push-button notifications.  Modules housing collaboration tools are not preconfigurable.

EVA: Push-button notifications in Collaborate are well-defined semiotic icons.  Mobile learners can quickly interact by pushing the raise hand button to ask a question, indicating status (happy or confused), etc.  However, an educator cannot organize the layout of modules to design a virtual classroom.

  • Recordings:  Everything in a session is recordable and in some instances Collaborate plays recordings on mobile.  Collaborate for Android and Kindle integrate Moodle and its .mp3/.mp4 conversion tool.

EVA: Learners using iOS devices can access recordings on their devices only if they previously recorded a session on their desktop.  Conversely, learners using Android devices can seamlessly convert and play recordings via Moodle which reduces dead air during their reflection process.

CISCO WEBEX

  • Access: Accessible via log-in account and URL on mobile.  WebEx Telepresence provides optimal access to the audio-only portion of sessions from mobile devices.  Mobile users can also transfer meetings from iOS devices to desktop computers by flicking the device.

EVA:  Mobile learners do not always want full-access to web-conferencing features which pod layouts automatically display.  For instance, mobile learners who have limited data for their iOS devices or are in transit may appreciate accessing the audio-only portion of a session. Moreover, mobile devices are key tools that access WebEx desktop thereby eliminating dead air when transitioning from a mobile learning environment to a desktop one.

  • BYOD: Available on Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Window Phone 8, and any other platforms supporting web browsers.

EVA: WebEx is ideal for a BYOD learning environment.  However, the quality of the learning experience compared across mobile platforms is unknown.

Rating:

  • Interface:  Mobile users select features they want to use from the main toolbar and can manipulate content by touching the screen.

EVA:  Although educators cannot preconfigure the structure of a virtual classroom, WebEx has a user-friendly interface that gives mobile learners the choice to share content and interacting face-to-face or just focus on one.

Rating:

  • Recordings: WebEx Networking Recording Player converts recordings to .mp4 on the desktop for users to upload to mobile devices.

EVA: WebEx does not make recordings accessible asynchronously.  There is no third party application that integrates video conversion to reduce dead air.
